OCEANSIDE LABOR DAY SWIM

Every Labor Day, Oceanside holds an annual pier swim. My dad thought it would be fun to have his kids join him on his passion for open water swimming. We all signed up and gave it a try!
We left our homes bright and early. As soon as we got there, we registered, got "branded" and received color coded swim caps according to our heat.

Lue and I look confident and calm but that was quite the contrary. My speedo happened to be black with red diagonal stripes across it... I looked like a big, juicy, bloody seal asking to get eaten!

Paul, Lue, The Ek's and I were all in the first heat. Matt swam with the second wave of swimmers and dad followed in the last and oldest group.

The first string of swimmers. On your marks, get set...

GO!!!!
I had spit in my goggles at the last second to prevent them from fogging up. I had to rinse them as we were running out to sea. Could have been a little more prepared, I guess!

If you know Luella, every where she goes she brings a blanket. The girl is constantly cold. It was not surprising to see Lue the only one in a wetsuit in 72 degree water!

Seriously think I drank half the ocean at the start of the race. It is definitely different than swimming laps in a pool. I think I will join my dad for a few practice laps in the ocean before I attempt the Alcatraz swim.

My dad accomplished the 1 mile swim in 27 minutes. Not bad for almost 62 years old! Matt beat him out by about one minute but was in a different heat.

The race finished with my dad's "South End". (When he lived in the bay area he was apart of the "South End Rowing Club" which included a huge group of open water swimmers)
We had a great time dad! Thanks for getting us all to participate. I'm definitely in for the next swim!

So cool! and I just wanted to say that you DO NOT look like a bloody seal! I wish I wasn't frightened to death of swimming like that in open water and that I wouldn't drown doing it. ha
